In loving memory of
Daniel Minh Tran
“Danny”
17 August 1990 — 9 February 2020
“First in, last out. Everyone comes home.”
Danny Tran was the sort of lifesaver who was first into the water and last out, and who could make a child who had just been dumped by a wave laugh about it. Born in Cabramatta in 1990, the son of Vietnamese boat people who met in a refugee camp in Malaysia and arrived in Sydney with almost nothing, he grew up above the family's bakery on John Street, where every day began at four in the morning with the smell of baguettes.
He first saw the ocean at nine, on a school excursion to Cronulla, and refused to leave. At fourteen he joined the nippers at North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club, where his parents, who could not swim, watched from the sand in sun hats and anxiety. He earned his Bronze Medallion at sixteen, studied exercise science and physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, and worked as a physiotherapist at St George Hospital in Kogarah, where patients learned that the exercises were non-negotiable but the jokes were free. He became patrol captain at twenty-four, trained dozens of young lifesavers and quietly brought more than a dozen swimmers back from rips without ever mentioning it at dinner.
Off the beach he cooked his mother's bun bo Hue for the whole club, played guitar badly and patiently learned to paddle a surf ski. In January 2020, when Sydney was shrouded in bushfire smoke, he organised free physio sessions for the families of volunteer firefighters. A few weeks later, on 9 February 2020, he died unexpectedly at twenty-nine, after a sudden, short illness. He leaves his parents, Hung and Linh, his sister Kim, his partner Jess, and an entire beach that lowered its flags for him.
