  Friend and neighbour in Nairobi

  We grew up two villages apart in Bungoma and ended up in the same Nairobi estate. Joyce brought ugali and chicken to my door when I was ill, and stayed to read me her column. Her laugh carried across three compounds.

  Former pupil at Kakamega School

  Mwalimu Wafula taught us the Berlin Conference using a bag of groundnuts, and we have never forgotten who got what. I am now a lawyer in Nairobi. Whenever I walk into court on time, I give him a small silent salute.
