Tributes
Remembering Esi Nana Ama Mensah-Bonsu · 1y ago
Church friend, Calvary Methodist, Osu
She read the lesson on Sundays in the same steady voice she used on ward rounds. Several of us were once her patients, and none of us ever felt anything but safe. Calvary will feel very quiet without her.
Remembering Alhassan Abdulai Suhuyini · 2y ago
Former colleague, Ghana Education Service
I was a young teacher posted from the south, frightened of the dry north. Headmaster Suhuyini sat me under his neem tree with tea and told me, 'You are a guest for one week, then you are family.' It was exactly right.
Remembering Elizabeth Araba Mensah-Bonsu · 6y ago
Neighbour and former pupil's husband
I once forgot her birthday and she let me know by sending a grammar book. It was a gentle reproach and a correct one. She was the best-read woman in Cape Coast and she wore it so lightly that you hardly noticed.
Remembering Emmanuel Nii Okai Quartey · 7y ago
Former Achimota student, now a professional trumpeter
Mr. Quartey would stand behind my chair at rehearsal and press two fingers between my shoulder blades. 'Breathe from there,' he said. I still do. Every note I play comes with his two fingers on my back. Ghana's brass sections have lost their father.
