Neighbour and Women's Guild friend
When my first child came early, it was Matron Grace who sat with me through the night, took my hand and told me to breathe like I was blowing out a candle. My daughter is now a nurse. She says she chose it because of the woman who knitted her first cardigan.

Neighbour of forty years in Kiambaa
Mzee Maina once climbed a pole at ten at night in the rain because my mother's shop had gone dark, and he refused to take a shilling. He said light was not something you charge a neighbour for. Every time I flip a switch I still hear him say it.
