  Ibu Prof would stop mid-lecture, look out of the window and say, 'The word for that rain is not in the dictionary yet.' Then she would give us the Minang word. I wrote it on my hand. I have written it on my daughter's hand now.

  Pak Slamet's one minute of silence changed me. I heard a rooster, a bicycle bell and my own heart. I carried that minute to Universitas Indonesia, to Jakarta, to every exam. I give one minute to my own daughter every morning. It is the best lesson I ever received.
